The B.A.E.F. today
The program of B.A.E.F. awards for the academic year 2019-2020 comprises 104 individuals:
92 Belgian Fellows to study in the United States
11 American Fellows to study in Belgium
1 Alumni award laureate
The Fellows were selected competitively from a pool of brilliant applicants by a Fellowship Committee that interviews all candidates personally.
Belgian Fellows 2019-2020 and American fellows 2018-2019 got together on June 7, 2019 at the University Foundation.
The fellowship awards include a stipend ranging from $18,000.00 to $45,000.00, the payment of tuition fees between $30,000.00 and $56,000.00, as well as coverage for health insurance. For the academic year 2019-2020 there are awards in outright gift to 85 graduate and research Fellows.7 Belgian Fellows study Business Administration in the United States and their award comprises both an outright gift and a conditional grant. In addition 8 Belgian Fellows candidates for an initial MS degree received support for a second year of study.
Finally, Honorary Fellowships for 2019-2020 were granted to 8 students, who secured financial support outside the B.A.E.F.
The Alumni Award 2019 in the field of Biomedical sciences, including biochemistry, biophysics, genetics, microbiology, medicine, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, zoology, botany, agriculture and ecology, in the amount of 10,000 € was awarded to Prof. dr David Alsteens from the Louvain Institute of Biomolecular Science Technology NanoBiophysics Lab. The jury appreciated the novelty of the experimental, technological and theoretical approaches to detect the dynamic binding spectrum of ligands directly in the cellular context.
The expense budget of the academic year 2018-2019 amounts to $ 5,450,115 with income from endowment covering less than half of the expenses. The remainder of the expenses is covered by annual gifts in Belgium and in the United States from Alumni, associated Foundations, private, public and corporate sources. Individuals, organizations or foundations that subscribe to eponymous Graduate or Postdoctoral B.A.E.F. Fellowships, carrying their name.
